CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – A pier from one of Charleston’s old Cooper River bridges will be painted with the ten colors traditionally used on buildings in the city’s historic district.

After the Ravenel Bridge opened a decade ago, the pier was left standing.

Local media outlets report that Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. announced Monday the pier will be painted with the Charleston colors. The top will be painted black and have the word “Charleston,” but that will be visible only from above.

The painting idea was proposed by Jim Weinberg, an interior decorator who recently moved to Charleston. When Weinberg lived in Atlanta he volunteered with Keep American Beautiful, coming up with plans to paint water towers, bridges and other structures.

The work of painting the pier should be complete by mid-November.
